A major security alert was triggered in Ramban district early Friday after a suspicious Scorpio vehicle allegedly breached a police checkpoint at Chanderkote and fled towards Nashri despite repeated attempts by personnel to stop it.
According to initial information, the incident took place around 3.30 a.m. when the Scorpio, bearing registration number JK02AK-1743, was travelling from the Srinagar side towards Jammu.
Police personnel deployed at the Chanderkote security checkpoint signalled the vehicle to stop, but the driver allegedly ignored the instructions and sped away.
Sources said police personnel fired three rounds in an attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle, but it continued towards Nashri, prompting a large-scale search operation involving Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Army.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ramban Arun Gupta reached the area to supervise the operation.
The suspicious Scorpio was subsequently seized near Dalwas, the SSP said.
“The district police have seized the suspicious Scorpio near Dalwas, and further investigation is underway. Detailed information will be shared after the investigation progresses,” Gupta said.
Security forces intensified searches in the area following the incident, while the reason behind the vehicle allegedly evading the security checkpoint is yet to be established.
Police said all aspects of the incident are being investigated.
