The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Monday that the southwest monsoon is poised to arrive in North Bengal within the next three to four days. This development affects sub-Himalayan districts, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri.
The northern regions of West Bengal are witnessing pre-monsoon rain, with heavy downpour anticipated soon. The IDM stated that conditions remain favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon into sub-Himalayan areas, though it will miss the standard entry date of June 6.
Despite the rainfall in some regions, South Bengal continues to experience high humidity levels. According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is likely in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar over the forthcoming days.
Light to moderate rainfall is also expected in the southern districts of the state during this period. The IMD’s report highlighted Alipurduar for receiving the highest rainfall in West Bengal over the past 24 hours, recording 133 mm until 8:30 AM on Monday. Jalpaiguri followed with 53 mm, Cooch Behar with 18 mm, and Darjeeling and Kalimpong recorded 7.8 mm and 19 mm, respectively.
The imminent arrival of the monsoon brings hope for the agricultural community, which has been eagerly awaiting good rainfall for sowing of crops. Farmers often rely on the timely arrival of the monsoon to ensure a bountiful harvest in the Kharif season.
As the monsoon progresses, residents of West Bengal should prepare for a change in weather patterns. With the IMD closely monitoring developments, citizens can expect timely updates on any pertinent changes regarding rainfall and weather conditions.
