The Meteorological Department (MeT) forecasts a significant 10-day wet spell across Jammu and Kashmir, warning residents of heavy to very heavy rainfall. This weather phenomenon, expected between August 9 and 11, poses threats of flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging, particularly in the Jammu division.
From August 7 to 8, the department predicts light to moderate rain and thundershowers in several areas throughout the Union Territory. Some locations may experience brief, intense showers during this period.
However, the period from August 9 to 11 appears particularly concerning. The MeT has issued a clear alert for heavy rainfall in several districts of Jammu division, alongside the risk of intense showers in some areas of the Kashmir division.
The aftermath from August 12 to 17 shows a change in the weather pattern to light rain and thundershowers across many places. This may bring temporary relief, but conditions remain delicate.
Considering the anticipated heavy rain, the MeT Department has issued an advisory specifically for August 9 to 11. They caution that torrential rain could lead to flash floods in vulnerable locations and considerable landslides in hilly terrains, which may also result in waterlogging in low-lying areas.
“Torrential rain and brief intense heavy showers may generate flash floods and landslides at vulnerable places and cause waterlogging in low-lying areas,” cautioned a MeT official.
This warning underlines the importance of public safety. Authorities urge people to stay vigilant, especially those near nallahs (streams) and landslide-prone areas. Residents must exercise extreme caution during the forecasted rainfall.
Authorities have taken proactive measures, advising communities to prepare for potential evacuation if conditions worsen. Emergency services will be on standby to respond swiftly to any incidents arising from the severe weather.
Overall, the predicted wet spell highlights the need for preparedness and community cooperation in facing nature’s unpredictability. As the rain approaches, officials urge everyone to adhere to safety protocols and stay updated on weather conditions.
