Star Indian batter Sarfaraz Khan joined the Team India camp ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka scheduled to commence on August 15 at the historic Galle International Stadium. Sarfaraz’s addition comes as a response to the unfortunate injury to Sai Sudharsan, who has been ruled out of the series.
Sarfaraz took to social media, sharing a selfie in the Indian colours, showcasing his lean physique that reflects months of dedicated fitness training. Fans eagerly anticipate his performance, especially given his strong domestic season.
The first Test marks an important opportunity for Sarfaraz, who last donned the India jersey in a challenging series against New Zealand in November 2024. That series etched itself in memory as it resulted in India’s first home series defeat in 12 years, culminating in a whitewash—a stark contrast to India’s usually dominant home record.
This upcoming match symbolizes a fresh start for the 25-year-old, paving the way for his second chance after making his Test debut earlier that same year against England. In six Tests and 11 innings, he has accumulated 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including a century and three half-centuries, with a highest score of 150.
Sarfaraz firmly established his worth through remarkable performances in domestic cricket this year. His outstanding tally of 429 runs over seven Ranji Trophy matches at an impressive average of 53.62 included a century and a fifty, with a personal best of 227.
In the competitive Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Sarfaraz continued to make headlines, scoring 329 runs in seven innings at a phenomenal average of 65.80, achieving a strike rate of 203.09, which exemplifies his explosive batting style, including a century and three fifties.
Furthermore, during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he accumulated 303 runs in just six matches, showcasing a stellar average of 75.75 and a strike rate of 190.56, which also included a century and two fifties. This remarkable performance landed him a lucrative contract with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for Rs 75 lakh, during which he scored 161 runs in seven innings.
Most recently, he participated in the Mumbai T20 League, playing for Aakash Tigers MWS, where he displayed his prowess by scoring 161 runs in five innings at an average of 32.20, including a notable half-century and a striking average of 214.67 for his T20 outings.
As it stands, Team India, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, currently finds itself fifth in the World Test Championship standings, having achieved four victories against four losses in nine matches, resulting in a Points Percentage of 48.150.
With heightened anticipation, here is the updated squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka: Shubman Gill (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (Wicketkeeper), Dhruv Jurel (Wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi, and Sarfaraz Khan.
