Tension remains palpable in Kashmir as authorities gear up for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations on August 15. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), V K Birdi, announced a multi-layered and robust security framework designed to ensure a peaceful observance of the national holiday.
Birdi, speaking to reporters in Srinagar, confirmed that comprehensive security measures encompass not only the city but also extend across various districts of the valley. He stressed that the Jammu and Kashmir Police continuously maintain strict vigilance to uphold law and order.
“The Jammu and Kashmir Police always maintains robust security arrangements not just in Srinagar city, but across various districts of the valley. Multi-layered security arrangements are in place, not only at the specific venues but also in the areas surrounding the city,” Birdi stated.
The ongoing investigations into recent attacks in Anantnag and Pulwama have raised concerns among residents. When asked about the status of these investigations, the IGP responded, “It is ongoing, and so, it would not be appropriate for me to disclose that right now. Whenever there are such clear details or information to be shared with you, we will do so at an appropriate time.”
Birdi appealed to the community to participate actively in the celebrations. “This is a public function. The police serve as facilitators and organizers. We urge people to join these events in large numbers and contribute to their success,” he encouraged.
On Monday, Birdi reviewed security protocols and preparations for the Independence Day festivities at a meeting that included the IG of BSF, IG of CRPF, and other senior officers. They discussed strategies to manage any potential threats and ensure the day proceeds smoothly.
During this meeting, district police heads provided updates on preparations being made. The IGP directed officers to intensify patrolling, particularly in sensitive areas that have historically been vulnerable during public events.
In a comprehensive review, Birdi underscored the need for strict vigilance against any elements posing risks to safety. He highlighted the importance of enhancing security checkpoints throughout the valley, especially during the night and along the city’s entry and exit routes.
Authorities implemented new security measures, including surprise checks and frisking in key areas such as Lal Chowk. Such actions aim to deter potential disruptions while fostering a sense of safety among residents.
The main function will take place at Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium, where preparations are underway to ensure everything is in place well ahead of time. Officers have received directives to ensure all security measures are met and that the event culminates without incident.
As the nation approaches its Independence Day, the sentiments across Kashmir remain deeply intertwined with hopes for peace and stability. The security forces, through their proactive strategies, aim to provide residents with a safe environment to celebrate their homeland’s freedom.
