Two-time Olympic shuttler PV Sindhu recently opened up about her “brotherly” bond with cricketing superstar Virat Kohli. During a candid conversation on the RCB Podcast, Sindhu shared Kohli’s invaluable advice that transformed her outlook during the challenging lows of her sports career.
Sindhu, currently competing at the BWF World Championships in New Delhi, discussed her close-knit relationship with Kohli, emphasizing the support he offered during her struggles. The teaser of the podcast episode aired on the official social media handle of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), a team Kohli formerly captained.
Reflecting on a pivotal moment, Sindhu recounted the advice she received from Kohli when she faced self-doubt and uncertainty. “He is like my brother,” she expressed. “When I was at my lowest point, I met him and shared my feelings of inadequacy. He simply said, ‘Just show up; it is okay. Just go out there and play your game.’”
Her recollection of Kohli’s words highlights the essence of perseverance. Sindhu added, “His encouragement was to attend every match and training session, regardless of the outcome. He assured me that I would not lose anything. I know my training and abilities, so I must showcase my true self.” This conversation, she acknowledged, profoundly altered her perspective towards competition.
Sindhu conveyed how important it is to maintain their connection, revealing that she frequently shares updates about her victories with Kohli. “Whenever I win, I reach out to him to express my happiness. For instance, I inform him about my recent achievements. Meeting someone who has accomplished so much brings me joy, and I gain valuable insights from how he approaches the game,” she stated.
She also praised Kohli for his remarkable achievements and work ethic, adding, “Seeing him in action and understanding his mentality when he steps onto the field inspires me greatly.”
Recently, Sindhu showcased her exceptional skills at the BWF World Championships, triumphing over Ireland’s Sophia Noble with a convincing score of 21-7, 21-11 in the women’s singles Round of 64. This victory is another step in her quest to secure her third World Championships medal.
With her dedication and hard work, Sindhu continues to make her mark on the global stage. Her bond with Kohli not only motivates her personally but also underlines the significance of support systems among athletes, reinforcing that even the best in sports benefit from encouragement and camaraderie.
