The research, published in the journal <strong>Science<\/strong>, examines how <strong>temperature<\/strong> and <strong>rainfall<\/strong> interact and influence the transmission of the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Climate Change and Dengue Outbreaks<\/strong><br>As <strong>warmer, humid conditions<\/strong> driven by <strong>climate change<\/strong> contribute to <strong>dengue outbreaks<\/strong>, the disease has begun affecting countries that were previously free of it. Researchers from <strong>Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology<\/strong> and the <strong>Institute for Basic Science<\/strong> emphasized the importance of <strong>local climate conditions<\/strong> in the spread of dengue, calling for <strong>tailored strategies<\/strong> to prevent the disease in different regions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Temperature&#8217;s Role in Disease Spread<\/strong><br>Dengue, a <strong>viral infection<\/strong> caused by the bite of an infected mosquito, is most common in the <strong>tropical and sub-tropical climates<\/strong>, particularly in <strong>urban<\/strong> and <strong>semi-urban areas<\/strong>. The study focused on <strong>16 regions of the Philippines<\/strong>, examining data from <strong>2015 to 2019<\/strong>, and found a consistent link between <strong>higher temperatures<\/strong> and <strong>increased dengue cases<\/strong> across the regions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rainfall&#8217;s Impact Varies by Region<\/strong><br>While <strong>rainfall<\/strong> typically promotes the spread of dengue in <strong>eastern regions<\/strong> of the Philippines, its effects were found to <strong>decrease<\/strong> in the <strong>western regions<\/strong>. The researchers identified a <strong>critical factor<\/strong> that determines how rainfall influences dengue transmission: the <strong>variation in dry season length<\/strong>, or how long a dry season lasts before the arrival of rain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flushing Out vs. Creating Breeding Sites<\/strong><br>In areas with <strong>shorter dry seasons<\/strong>, rainfall helps <strong>flush out stagnant water<\/strong>, reducing the number of <strong>mosquito breeding sites<\/strong> and thereby <strong>suppressing dengue spread<\/strong>. However, in regions with <strong>longer or more variable dry seasons<\/strong>, <strong>sporadic rainfall<\/strong> can create new breeding sites, allowing mosquito populations to grow and <strong>increasing dengue cases<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global Implications and Future Research<\/strong><br>The researchers extended their study to <strong>Puerto Rico<\/strong>, using data from municipalities such as <strong>San Juan, Adjuntas<\/strong>, and <strong>Ponce<\/strong> between <strong>1986 and 2005<\/strong>. The findings in Puerto Rico mirrored those in the Philippines, confirming that <strong>temperature<\/strong> consistently drives dengue outbreaks, while <strong>rainfall&#8217;s effect<\/strong> varies depending on the region\u2019s dry season length.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tailored Prevention Strategies<\/strong><br>The authors concluded that these findings underscore the need for <strong>climate-specific prevention strategies<\/strong> to tackle <strong>mosquito-borne diseases<\/strong>.
