Former Chief Minister and National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah stated that Jammu is progressing towards inclusive development under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. On a recent occasion, Dr Abdullah made these remarks while engaging with a delegation of the National Conference, emphasizing that the government is easing public discontent by restoring faith in democratic processes.

Dr Abdullah asserted that in the past, Jammu received only hollow promises. Now, under the Omar Abdullah-led administration, the region is witnessing sustainable growth, which is vital for its residents. The delegation shared several long-pending issues that they claim accumulated from what they termed the misrule of the BJP over the last decade.

While discussing public matters, Dr Abdullah emphasized that the National Conference understands the difficulties and challenges that the citizens faced during years of unresponsive governance. He assured the delegation that the party remains committed to relieving the burdens of those affected, stating, “The Omar Abdullah-led government is making rapid strides to restore people’s faith in democratic institutions.”

Dr Abdullah did not shy away from discussing pressing concerns. Referring to the much-publicized Smart City project, he criticized the initiative, noting that during a recent spell of rain, waterlogging revealed the unaddressed issues linked with the project.

Highlighting government measures, he pointed out significant initiatives such as the preservation of the historic Mubarak Mandi heritage complex, which faced years of deterioration. The government has also introduced free transport for women, additional ration quotas to support poor families, and reinstated the Darbar Move to stimulate economic activity and provide relief to Jammu traders.

Dr Abdullah outlined ongoing projects—including ropeways, riverside development, and the creation of new lakes in Jammu—that are poised to position Jammu prominently on the national tourism map. These steps will enhance the region’s economy and provide opportunities for local communities.

In the context of upcoming elections, Dr Abdullah encouraged party workers to prepare for the forthcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) and Panchayat elections, urging them to focus on better representation for youth, especially women, to ensure governance aligns with their aspirations. “It’s time we strengthen our outreach to connect with the public effectively,” he said.

In a related event, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah urged Gujjar institutions to pursue scientific research on climate change impacts affecting the Gujjar-Bakerwal community. Speaking at the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust in Jammu, he emphasized that such research will help shape future policies beneficial to the community.

Omar Abdullah commemorated the third anniversary of the late Dr Masud Ahmed Choudhary, a respected educationist and former Vice-Chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University. He highlighted the community’s potential, saying, “There is no dearth of talent in Gujjar institutions. If this talent is channelled into research on climate change, it will strengthen the community.”

He also pointed out the Gujjar-Bakerwal community’s nomadic lifestyle that leaves them particularly vulnerable to climate shifts. He called for enhancing educational initiatives, including Gujjar hostels and mobile schools, while calling for an assessment on reservation impacts: “We have spoken about reservation for years, but serious studies on its real benefits are still lacking,” he noted.

During the discussions, Dr Farooq Abdullah echoed the message of unity and emphasized prioritizing education within the community, asserting that education is the key to securing a better future for upcoming generations. The event drew participation from numerous ministers, MLAs, and senior members of civil society, reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts towards a better Jammu.
