Sunil Sethi Resigns from JKCA, Alleges Back-Dated Orders

Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association member Sunil Sethi resigns, alleging back-dated orders by former Ombudsman amidst Supreme Court order for elections.

Sunil Sethi resigns from JKCA citing back-dated orders

In a significant upheaval within the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), Sunil Sethi has resigned from his position as a member of the JKCA Sub-Committee. Sethi, serving in the legal affairs role since 2021, cites the issuance of ‘back-dated orders’ by the former Ombudsman as the reason for his resignation. He addressed his resignation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) President, Mithun Manhas.

Sethi’s resignation coincides with the Supreme Court of India’s directive on 27 October, mandating that JKCA conduct elections within 12 weeks. This process will occur under the watchful eyes of the former Chief Election Commissioner, Achal Kumar Joti.

In his resignation letter, Sethi detailed the troubling circumstances around his decision. He argued that the direction to appoint a new Ombudsman has remained unapproved by the Election Officer until a new General Body is formed. He raised alarms regarding ‘back-dated orders’ being issued by the former Ombudsman, some allegedly reverting to March 2025—before such orders had been communicated to him.

Highlighting the potential ramifications of these orders, Sethi stated, ‘These orders are changing the club management and voting rights. This is to change the voting nomenclature, which I do not wish to be party to.’ His concerns reflect a broader context of political and administrative tensions within the JKCA amidst a crucial period of transition.

As he concluded his letter, he formally stated, ‘As such, I tender my resignation from the Member Sub-Committee. Please accept and relieve me. I am thankful for the opportunity the Board has bestowed on me.’

His resignation sheds light on underlying issues that might arise during the upcoming elections. It also raises questions about governance within the JKCA, particularly regarding the integrity of its electoral process.

Experts in sports governance assert that such allegations could further delay the electoral process and contribute to ongoing uncertainties that have plagued the JKCA in recent times. The Supreme Court’s oversight aims to bring about much-needed order, but incidents like Sethi’s resignation could undermine these efforts.

As the JKCA prepares for elections, it must address concerns over administrative practices and ensure transparency to restore stakeholder confidence. The implications of this resignation extend beyond structural changes within the JKCA, reflecting the broader need for reform and accountability in cricket administration in India.
