GMC Jammu, ICMR Unite for Cancer Prevention Workshop
A collaborative workshop by GMC Jammu and ICMR focused on cancer prevention and breast cancer survival strategies in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, enhancing healthcare delivery in the region.

Jammu, October 8, 2026: Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, in partnership with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), hosted an insightful two-day workshop aimed at enhancing cancer prevention and screening measures specifically for breast, oral, cervical, and gastric cancers. Held on October 7 and 8, 2026, this collaborative effort saw participation from various stakeholders across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, all united by a common goal: to refine cancer care strategies.
The workshop initiated actionable discussions focusing on practical, evidence-based strategies to amplify cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment in the region. With cancer incidence on the rise, especially in Jammu & Kashmir, the initiative seeks to foster early detection and timely intervention, underlining the necessity for a comprehensive healthcare framework.
Expert Guidance and Local Challenges
Facilitated by leading medical minds, including Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal at GMC Jammu, and Dr. Jyotsna Suri, HOD of Pathology, the event featured a breadth of expertise from ICMR specialists such as Dr. Nisha Jose and Dr. Bhawana Sirohi. These experts shared insights into the core challenges faced in implementing health interventions, emphasizing the need for locally tailored programs.
A significant part of the agenda involved sessions on data management, notably on the REDCap platform, led by Dr. Pulkit Verma. This session illustrated the crucial role of precise data handling in health interventions, serving as a backbone for evaluating their efficacy.
Advancing Breast Cancer Care Initiatives
Addressing the critical area of breast cancer care, the workshop aimed to craft a proposal that would enhance survival rates by tackling obstacles along the care continuum. The focus ranged from awareness campaigns to early detection initiatives, timely diagnosis, and seamless referral systems. Collaborative discussions among stakeholders helped pinpoint effective, evidence-driven strategies to bolster patient outcomes.
The integration of screening for major cancers in a unified strategy constituted another focal point of the discourse. This collective approach aims to improve cancer prevention and early detection and leverage existing healthcare resources to their fullest potential. Participants expressed enthusiasm about identifying at-risk populations, boosting screening services, and solidifying referral pathways for thorough investigations.
Bridging Research and Implementation
Convening this workshop at GMC Jammu served to bridge the gap between national research and regional healthcare practice. The attendance of ICMR officials, UT administrators, and academic leaders emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts across diverse sectors in enhancing public health initiatives.
Expected outcomes involve refining cancer prevention strategies, fostering awareness, and establishing efficient screening protocols, particularly for high-risk cancers. The workshop is set to catalyze the creation of scientifically robust proposals that can translate into actionable policies and frameworks tailored to the unique healthcare landscape of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
Path Forward: Enhancing Cancer Care
The workshop’s insights will contribute to:
- Elevating cancer prevention and awareness efforts.
- Improving systematic screening mechanisms for major cancers.
- Promoting timely detection and diagnosis.
- Streamlining patient referrals and continuing care.
- Enhancing breast cancer treatment pathways.
- Crafting adaptable, evidence-based intervention strategies.
- Augmenting data management and monitoring through digital innovation.
- Generating impactful evidence from implemented programs.

A Milestone for Cancer Control in the Region
The efforts from this workshop underscore a pivotal advancement towards establishing a responsive, evidence-focused cancer control framework for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. By aligning policymakers, healthcare experts, and stakeholders, the initiative aims to translate research advancements into practical health benefits, particularly for early cancer detection and improved access to care. Ultimately, the objective remains clear: to enhance cancer survival rates and quality of life for individuals affected by cancer across the region.
